Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust (SBBOT)
Wildlife Explorers
This is a group run for 8 to 12 year olds in conjunction with the RSPB. The aim is to bring nature to life by having fun with lots of hands on activites.
Events take place in and around the Field Centre on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10.00 till 14.00 and cost just £2.50 each.
In order to take part children must be registered with SBBOT and younger children should be accompanied by an adult. Please e-mail sbbot@talk21.com to register your interest and request registration forms. Events will be limited to 20 children so please contact us as soon as possible.
The activities that we are planning are described below:
| Date and event | Some more information |
May 23rd Introduction and nesting birds |
We will start by getting to know the area. If there is any ringing taking place we will watch some birds being ringed and look at how we identify them and find out how old they are. There will be some moths to look at that were caught the night before. Ringing and moths will start the activities each following meeting. The main activity will be a walk to watch the birds on the Scrape followed by lunch. In the afternoon we will watch the nest-boxes around the Observatory. |
| June 27th The Big Bug Hunt |
After registration we will look at any birds in the Ringing Room and any moths that we have. Next, we will carry out the Banded Snail Survey and start our woodlice survey. |
| July 25th Butterflies, moths and dragonflies |
This day is set aside especially for looking at these insects in different habitats. |
| August 22nd Beachcombing |
We will spend most of our time on the beach searching the tide-line. We can collect what we find and bring it back to the Observatory to look at it and sort it out. |
| September 26th Migration. |
Many birds will be migrating at this time of the year and we will look for migrants around the Observatory. The Banded Snail and woodlice surveys will be added to. |
| October 24th Change-over of Migrants |
Many summer visitors will have left and some winter visitors will be arriving. We will have a look around and see what we can find. We will try to finish the two surveys. |
| November 28th Fungi Foray |
Finding fungi is great fun and we will try to find some that are not too slimy. It is also the beginning of winter and we will be looking at the differences that have started since the summer. |
