School visits
Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory has a purpose built Field Centre where a variety of educational activities are avaliable. These activities cover many elements of Key stage 2 and are therefore suitable for all pupils aged 7 to 11. Activities can be tied in with the National Curriculum e.g. QCA Science Units 2C,4B & 6A.
A typical Visit can Include:
- Lots of hands on practical work
- A demonstration of bird ringing.
- A chance for the pupils to see wild birds close up
- How we record the scientific data and will also explain why we ring birds.
- A short walk to a grassland habitat for bug hunting, habitat comparison and discovering plants.
- Weather permitting, the pupils can be taken to the beach to do some beach combing
- Look at some of the marine life that is at the Bay.
- Sort through and identify some of their beach finds at the Field Centre
Facillities
A hall area is suitable as a meeting point, for packed lunches or for wet weather activities.
Lab / classroom: microscopes, whiteboard.
Viewing tower: views across the Bay and Worth marshes.
Library: Various wildlife reference books.
Picnic area: Outside Field Centre.
Toilets: Inside main building.
Hand-washing facilities.
Access for those with disabilities: Disabled toilets. The whole Field Centre building is wheelchair friendly.
Cost £4.50 per child full day, £3.00 per child half day
