Middle Field:

An area managed by SBBOT on behalf of the private landowners (Mr and Mrs Hunter) as a nature reserve, the original field is derived from old sand dunes and is now enclosed on three sides by the Sandwich Bay Estate. The main habitat is unimproved grassland, with some scrub, a small reedbed and a large artificial pond.

Management aims to enhance the conservation value of the site through cutting/raking to increase the amount of dune flora present.

The field acts as a wildlife refuge and can attract migrants such as Wryneck and Ring Ouzel, and has seen scarcities such as Bluethroat.

Notable species :

  • Marbled White butterfly (Melanargia galathea)
  • Small Red-eyed Damselfly (Erythromma viridulum)
  • Cepero's Groundhopper (Tetrix ceperoi)
  • Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza praetermissa)
