Restharrow Dunes:

This 16.61 acre site is part of the Sandwich Bay and Hacklinge Marshes SSSI. It is situated on the seaward side of the Ancient Highway and was acquired by the Trust in the 1980s. It is mainly ancient dune meadow managed by winter grazing.

Management strategy in this semi-natural grassland is to maintain plant diversity and to avoid further enrichment of the soil through cutting and raking in early autumn.

Notable species :

    Saltmarsh Rush (Juncus maritimus)

    Lady's Bedstraw (Galium verum)

    Restharrow (Ononis repens)

    Sand Sedge (Carex arenaria)

Bird interest in Restharrow Dunes includes breeding residents such as Corn Bunting, Grey Partridge and Stonechat. During periods of migration it provides refuge for species such as Meadow Pipit, Reed Bunting and the occasional Ring Ouzel.

The reserve contains 25 - 30% of Small Heath butterflies found around the Estate recording area.
