Waldershare Gully
Conservation Status:

  • Part of the Sandwich Bay and Hacklinge Marshes SSSI.

The Gully was part of the line of the Ancient Cut, the abandoned canal dug by hand in the sixteenth century in an attempt to keep the Cinque port of Sandwich fully operational.

The depression still holds shallow floods in most winters, ensuring a strong floral diversity here. The area is managed to control the growth of sallow and willow.

The area is ringed from time to time, especially in autumn - please respect any notices which may appear from time to time.

This year (2006), the main path through the centre of the Gully (above) has been temporarily closed to help encourage some of the rarer flora and reduce the rank grass present - a new, snaking, birding trail (left) has been marked out for Members and visitors to enjoy.

As with many of the areas close to the sea, rarities can and do show up - as was the case with last year's Great Reed Warbler.
