Restharrow Scrape
Conservation Status:

  • None at present but long term management objectives are covered in a Countryside Stewardship agreement with DEFRA.

What was once affectionately known as 'the desert field' (remember the large amounts of sand that could blow across the Ancient Highway?) has become a mini-oasis thanks to the hard work of the Trust and a little help from friends such as the MoD..

The area is occupied by SBBOT on a 10 year lease from our neighbour Mr Richard Daw, with the aim to increase numbers of breeding waders and 2004 saw successes with Oystercatcher and Lapwing both nesting.

It is also hoped to establish a floral sward similar to that on Restharrow Dunes on the eastern half of the reserve during the coming years.

A small public hide has been positioned at the eastern end of the scrape and a concrete path laid together with special rest benches and disabled parking bay to allow easier access for all - many thanks to Bo Boelens of the Disabled Birders Association for their advice.

The Scrape has already attracted passage waders such as Temminck's Stint, Wood Sandpiper and Jack Snipe, plus oddities such as Garganey, Little Gull, Egyptian Goose and Great Skua.

During the summer months many passerines come to drink and Blue-headed Wagtail can be regular.
