Butterflies were on the wing in good numbers under an azure blue sky on the 3rd, including 12 Peacocks, 2 Small Whites and 3 Small Tortoiseshells. 6 Peacocks were evident on the 4th, the spring's first Speckled Wood was seen on the 14th and on the 22nd the first Green-veined Whites were seen in the Elms and on New Downs, where 18 Peacocks were recorded sheltering from the wind on the sunny side of a 300m alder windbreak. Our first Large White, Holly Blue, Orange Tips and Small Copper were seen on the 25th and on the following day along Worth track were at least 19 Peacocks and 2 Commas.

Two sessions of moth-trapping over the weekend of the 12th/13th produced a seasonal, if unexciting mix of March Moth, 2 Common Quakers, a Powdered Quaker and 2 Clouded Drabs.
