What to See: Mammals

Mammals are not systematically recorded at present; instead a log is kept of casual observations made by our warden and volunteers. Recent records can be seen on our sightings pages. Below is a list of the mammals that are most likely to be seen around our recording area.

Hedgehog

Common, but not often seen.

Mole

Very common, but rarely seen.

Common Shrew

Very common, sometimes seen.

Pygmy Shrew

Common, sometimes seen.

Water Shrew

Usually recorded every year, rarely seen.

Whiskered Bat

Probably occurs annually; rarely seen.

Daubenton's Bat

Probably occurs annually; rarely seen.

Serotine

Probably occurs annually; rarely seen.

Noctule

Probably occurs annually; rarely seen.

Pipistrelle

Fairly common.

Rabbit

Very common, hard to miss.

Brown Hare

Common; more often seen in spring / winter.

Grey Squirrel

Increasingly common, breeding in the Elms.

Bank Vole

Common, sometimes seen.

Field Vole

Common, sometimes seen.

Water Vole

Usually recorded every year; rarely seen but widespread on flood plain

Wood Mouse

Very common.

House Mouse

Very Common

Brown Rat

Common

Fox

Common, seen often.

Stoat

Common, but thinly distributed, not often seen.

Weasel

Common, infrequently seen.

Badger

Very rare.

Common Seal

Common offshore, especially at mouth of estuary.

Grey Seal

Scarce offshore.

Harbour Porpoise

Rare, usually a stranding.

Bottle-nosed Dolphin

Rarely seen, some strandings.
